Personal Statement

I started my art career in 1994 as a sculptor after leaving Cardiff Art College with a BA HONS fine art degree. Through my art journey however, I have found painting to be the medium I most enjoy. Painting is my passion now and I enjoy experimenting with different materials and seeing how far I can push them. I also like to see what materials work well together and which ones don’t. The medium I used for this body of work is a mixture of acrylic, ink, bleach, collage and oil bars. This combination of materials allows me to layer colours and textures. I can also communicate the emotion, the wildness and the dynamism of a beautiful landscape with this process. In the future I hope to experiment with other mediums and combinations but still taking seascapes as my inspiration. My trips to Cornwall and the Inner Hebrides especially Raasay have inspired me enormously. I have tried to capture the different, extreme moods of both places through using dynamic colours, textural mark making and the use of light. I have just started to incorporate buildings into my pictures and hope to develop and explore this side of my work in the future.
